Sample Somerset Cheese Menu
The problem with Somerset cheese is that it's at the mercy of the seasons. When grass disappears along with the sunshine and nice weather so do most of the soft cheeses, particularly from goats and sheep. The selfish critters refuse to give up their milk until the weather gets warmer so our cheeseboard is ever-changing to reflect the best of what's available. The following is just a sample.(Unpasteurized)Montgomery Cheddar
Made by Jamie Montgomery - officially the world's best cheese maker, at North Cadbury (rumoured to be the location of King Arthur's Camelot), this legendary unpasteurized hand-made hard cheese is matured for 18 months to give a rich complex flavour with a lingering finish.(Organic - Pasturised - Vegetarian)Bath Soft
With its "mushroomy" coat and soft dreamy interior Bath Soft, made at Park Farm in Kelston, was causing a stir as early as 1801. Non other than Admiral Lord Nelson was sent some by his father as a gift and it was recorded that his "sweetheart was gratified" by its subtle creamy flavour.(Unpasteurized - Vegetarian)Exmoor Blue
Not as powerful as some veined cheeses, Exmoor Blue - made at Willett Farm near Taunton from Jersey Cow's Milk, has a buttery flavour with a bit of bite and herby undertones.(Organic - Pasteurised - Vegetarian)Wyfe of Bath
Awarded Gold at the 2010 British Cheese Awards, this semi-hard cheese is "chewy, succulent and bouncy" and, in the words of its maker Graham Padfield, "redolent of buttercups and meadows."(Unpasteurised - Vegetarian)White Nancy
This sweet and creamy cheese with a white, bloomy rind is made by Pete Humphries with milk from his 600-strong herd of goats near Glastonbury Tor. According to Pete, if you still don't like goats cheese after trying this he will stroll out into the middle of Mary Street and throw himself under a passing charabanc!(Pasteurised - Vegetarian)Driftwood
A semi-soft, zingy goats milk cheese, rolled in ash. Driftwood, made at Whitelake Cheeses, is truly made by hand... the makers still pour the curd into cylindrical moulds using a bucket!(Pasteurised - Vegetarian)Goldilocks
A Camembert style cheese made at the Daisy and Co Dairy near Bruton in Somerset. Goldilocks is made from organic Jersey cows milk which results in a creamy yellow appearance and super soft texure when ripe. We sometimes serve "Black Eyed Susan", which is Goldilocks rolled in cracked black pepper.Served with Fudges Crackers, Quince Jam, Nutty Loaf and Oven-Dried Fruits
